SAAFE House was incorporated in 1984 as Walker County Family Violence Council
to provide help, shelter, and support to victims of family violence. In 1989
we started offering services for sexual assault survivors, therefore, we
changed our name to SAAFE House. SAAFE House is an acronym for Sexual Assault
and Abuse Free Environment. SAAFE House has facilities in Walker and Polk
County and we serve all surrounding areas.
Our goal is to help victims of family violence and sexual assault obtain the
necessary skills to live abuse free. SAAFE House offers a safe, supportive
environment to victims and their children, provides support services to the
abusive family members, and helps families find non-violent ways of coping
with stresses that might lead to abuse.
WHAT IS SAAFE HOUSE?
Abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, and/or sexual.
A person is more likely to be abused by a relative or family member
than to be attacked by a stranger.
Over 50 percent of rape victims know their assailant.
Battering occurs at all economic levels and along all class and
cultural lines.
70 percent of men who batter their wives also batter their children.
More than 100,000 Texas women are assaulted in their homes at least
once a week.
In Texas, there are currently 66 women's shelters and 60 rape crisis
centers.
30 percent of women murdered in this country are killed by their
husbands, ex-husbands, or boyfriends.
(All statistics above are from the National Victim Center.)
